IRIN Radio produces high-quality programming in local languages on humanitarian issues, ready for broadcast by local stations. The service also provides hands-on training to journalists, developing their production and reporting skills, allowing local radio to serve communities more effectively.

AFGHANISTAN: Medical waste poses health risk in urban areas
Waste products from the health care system in Kabul and other cities is not being properly disposed of and creates a public health risk, according to experts. Medical waste - including used needles, soiled dressings, diagnostic samples, chemicals, and body parts - is lying in open rubbish dumps near hospitals in urban areas. AFGHANISTAN: Hand washing can reduce child mortality - health experts
Tens of thousands of children across Afghanistan will wash their hands with soap on 15 October, the Global Hand Washing Day. The Ministry of Public Health says hand washing can reduce child mortality and morbidity by up to 50 percent. Preventable diseases such as diarrhoea kill about 50,000 children in the country every year, according to the UN Children's Fund. IRIN's Masooma Mohammadi reports…
